i have started Sean on solids for the past couple of weeks but this week i decided to start weaning him fully, he is 5 months old, he loves the solids but he will not take water or juice's. He spits them out very funny but I am wondering if any of you guys had the same problem, have tried flavoured water, apple juice, orange juice and plan water but he will not take it. Any suggestions would be much appricated.
Hi Karen, I started weaning Craig hes 5months next week and the health nurse told me not to bother with juices she just said give him his bottle with feeds and cooled boiled water if hes thirsty . I suppose though you just have to experiment yourself and see what suits . Amarie.
Yeah, as Amarie said, I just avoided juices with Daniel but, like Sean, he had no interest in it anyway and he also refused water too. I tried and tried to get him to take it but it was no use.
One night he woke up very sick with a temperature of 104 degrees. I rang the doctor and he told me to give him Calpol, keep him cool and give him clear fluids only. Because he was so dehydrated he gladly took the water. Then, when he was a bit older and would wake for a night feed (which he didn't need as he was getting sufficient milk during the day - I think the bottle was just for comfort), I replaced the milk with water. I don't know why - maybe because he was too tired to notice - but he started drinking the water no problem. He's just gone two years old now and the only liquids he drinks are milk and water. He absolutely loves it now! Of course all babies are different and what works for one may not work for another but keep persevering at it. Eventually he'll get thirsty enough!
Hi Karen, When I was weaning Hylke he never wanted to drink either....I just gave him a cup or bottle with every feed but never insisted on him drinking it, I always assumed that if he was thirsty he'd drink it and so he went for a few months without drinking anything apart from his bottle of formula.....one day he just started drinking and from that day onwards he's always drank whatever I put in his cup, so maybe don't force it on him.....when he's thirsty he will drink whatever you give him...just make sure that you keep offering drinks to him though.... good luck Rikkie
