I think this is well worth a read for anyone who is trying to save some money, good route planned for shopping in Newry too!
My first stop when I go to Newry is ICELAND at the back of Dunnes Stores. The offers are superb.I ws up last Saturday and they were doing an offer on Dolmio bolognese sauces and lasagne sauces, buy one get one free. The price in sterling was 1.39 sterling and ICELAND were giving 70 pence sterling for every euro spent. So two jars of Dolmio sauce cost me 1.98 euro or 99cent for each jar.Unbelieveable!Their meat ,chicken, vegetables, eggs etc are all top quality and they are all reasonably priced.Bring or buy a cooler bag when you go to Iceland so that you can stock up with meat, chicken etc.all at knockdown prices.
My next stop is then Poundstretcher which is not too far away from Iceland.I buy all our toilet cleaning liquids in here as they are good quality and cheap.Parazone bleach (1250 ml) is 99p sterling here and AVIVA toilet cleaner is 49p.I always tend to use sterling in poundstretcher because they give a bad rate on the Euro. They also stock gardening materials, clothes, babyclothes, all types of things at knockdown prices. But make sure to use sterling there or use your credit card.Do not pay in Euro.
My next visit is then to Sainsburys in The Quays shopping centre.Sainsburys give an excellent rate on our euro at 73pence for your euro. The quality of Sainsburys own brand food etc is fantastic. It lasts longer and the quality is like nothing Ive ever tasted before and the friendliness of the staff is second to none and the store is easy to get around.
My big savings here are on booze in particular.I purchase Sainsburys own Irish Cream Liquer which is so similar to Baileys it's scary.Last Saturday it cost me 6.99 sterling for a 70cl bottle of Sainsburys Irish cream liquer which at Sainsburys rate works out at E9.56.I also bought Sainsburys own bacardi which for 1L bottle costs E15.46.A guinness fridge pack which contains 8 500ml cans of Draught Guinness costs E11.90 or E1.47 a can.Another big saving is on Pampers nappies.Pampers newborn cost E9.84. They also stock something that we could not get in Dublin,Diet Vanilla Coke which is gorgeous.300ml can 6 pack costs E2.39 or 39 cent a can if you buy 2 6 packs.
Apply for Sainsburys nectar card where you earn points for every transaction you make and they have machines at the front entrance to the supermarket where you swipe your card to avail of the offers on in the supermarket that day.Great value, great prices and excellent quality!
My next stop is then SEMI-CHEM which is at the back of Sainsburys in The Quays shopping centre.I purchase deoderants, all kinds of baby items from nappy bags 300 for 89p sterling to shampoos,Pantene shampoo priced at 1.39 or E1.97.I purchased a twin pack of Sure deoderant for 2.49 sterling or E3.53 FOR 2.Johnson and Johnson cotton buds 99p sterling or E1.4.Johnsons baby powder,99p sterling or E1.40.I also purchase washing tablets called ACDO for the washing machine for 99p sterling. They contain 24 tablets and are perfect.Semi chem offer 70p sterling for every euro spent.
Most of the chemists in Newry are reasonable but shop around for the best rate on the Euro.Superdrug is pretty reasonable and usually have sales on.But take a walk in and out of shops there and you will find the differences in prices between there and southern Ireland startling!
Another tip for those who love knick knacks is Boyds in Newry. They are also based in Dundalk. We bought coathangers(plastic) for 99p sterling each and they are priced at E2.00 in all the pound shops here.We also purchased magic wipers for our cars at 99p for two. They are at least over E14 here depending on what type of car you have. These wipers fit all cars.
I live in Palmerstown and it costs me approx E10 in petrol to travel to Newry and takes me approx 1 hour and 20 minutes.I use the toll bridge on the M50 and the M1 which costs me E6.20 but having spent E200 in Newry last weekend my boot was full and you get more value for your money. The trip is wearing but we go up to stock up approx once a month.Only by voting with your feet and spending your money elsewhere will prices come down here. Please try it once.
Just been reading the post. I ALWAYS shop up North. Its much cheaper than the likes of Dunnes, Tesco or Superquinn and I find they have a better range of foods and a much nicer choice.
I agree that it is a tiresome day but its well WORTH the trip up..................
Its starting to get very packed up there now at weekends coming up to christmas but I am sure if you were able to head up mid week it would not be so bad.
We usually go up once a month and it takes approx.45 mins in the car on a good day.
That article is so true we shop in sainsburys and its a real pleasant shopping trip and its dirt cheap (well kinda!)
The choice of food is fairly similar to marks and sparks expensive brand but the same price of say, tescos own brand which says a lot to how much we're bein ripped off
for instance, the cow and gate formula is over €10 usually but its ONLY €6.50 in sainsburys so we tend to buy in bulk once a month and the bill usually tots up to €180 which is incredible,We buy the basics where we usually shop,
although, i noticed a lot of people are coping on to it as half the customers are dubs!
anyway, keep it hush or they'll start to increase their prices!
