I breastfed for almost 5mths and i found the best place 2 feed is anywhere!!! Really, if baby is hungry feed her. I've fed in nearly every place u can think of, the bus, train, luas, bus stop, walking around dunnes and a lot more and never got told 2 stop. Sure your going to feel embarassed and strange, but whats more important, your babies well being and health or you not having to feel embarassed??
So come on girls, Get the system going and do it as its suppose to be. Ireland has the lowest rate in europe for freely breastfeeding so lets promote it and get the ball rolling! If others can do it why cant you?! Think about it........
Hi Shelly, welcome to the board! Personally I would never let me child go hungry. I fed Eoin for 11 months and fed anywhere and loved every minute of it. Was never asked to stop feeding and if I had of I would have been very shocked and would have no hesitation in putting the person straight. It is my choice to breastfeed and I think you can also choose to be discreet, and the end of the day I think most people would rather have a child being breast fed beside them than a roaring child! Ireland needs to change in attitude. I found my friends used to say to me , "is he not on the bottle yet?" To which I would proudly reply, "NO"
I breastfed Sean for almost 5 months and found it very embarrasing at first to be honest... I felt very aware and awkward. In the begining I use to try feed Sean as much as I could before I had to go anywhere and then if he woke while we where down the town I found myself rushing up the road to get indoors to feed him again - had myself run ragged !!
I found feeding at the breastfeeding group helped me overcome alot of the embarrasment issues - and being around Michelle (who was great and fed Jasmine when she needed feeding no matter where she was) gave me a confidence boost (thanks Michelle )
I also breastfed for 5 months and, like Lee said, I found the breastfeeding support group great for helping overcome some of the embarrassment (but not all of it I must admit).
I used to wear a vest top under my clothes so I could take my arms out of it and pull that down and pull my top up so I was in no way exposed. I also used to put a blanket over Daniel to be 100% sure (I was totally paranoid!).
I found most people go out of their way not to look anyway so it's usually not too bad.
