Just read the recipes, thanks, they are a nice change from the usual................
I have a little tip myself, if just fruit is not satisfying enough for your little one; what really worked for me was the combination of apple, cinnamon and potato
this is an old dutch winter dish: peel and core 2-4 sweet apples and peel 1-2 medium size potatoes, put them in a pot with a small amount of water and sprinkle some cinnamon on top, slowly cook until soft and then puree.
I know it seems to scare people a bit, it really is actually a very nice combination.....In Holland it is called "hot lightening" and is eaten in the winter time, the sugars in the apples keep the temperature of the dish high so it warms you like eating a soup on a cold day. Maybe I should bring a sample for you guys to try on one of the get togethers just to help you over the hump it is by the way very nice with smoked sausage, another one of Hylke's favourites
Well, finally got round to trying your recipe Rikkie and Sean just loved it !! He couldn't get enough - will def have that one on the menu again !! Had almost given up on the awl home cooking as it was just becoming a battle ground every dinner time.... so it was just great to see him eating it all and loving it :)
I'm delighted he liked it! Hylke went through a phase where he made lunch/diner time very unpleasant but don't give up your ol' home made cooking......he may just be a picky eater and needs time to get accustomed to new flavours?!!!
Thanks, I'll keep at it - now that I found something he likes its given me a boost....
I'm finding it hard to find a veg he likes - I've bought turnip and carrots so I'll give them a go now - fingers crossed I'll find something else he likes :)
You probably already have tried but in case you didn't, sweet potatoes seem to go with everything and Hylke really loved them mixed with other veggies.......
Yeah, thanks, I have tried sweet patato - in fact thats what I used when making your dish...
I made turnip the other day, but didn't get the consistency right, it was very dry and didn't blend well, might try next time blending it with some sweet patato and maybe some of babies milk ... It's all about trial and error I guess :)
you're right.....even now Hylke is 14 months I get it wrong sometimes and it has driven me mad occassionally . the major thing is to get on with it, you know you're doing the right thing trying yourself and getting it wrong every now and then. Jars are great for when your on the the go but at the end of the day nothing beats freshly prepared food.....
Just another crazy mix of fruit that Hylke cannot get enough of is:
mango, banana, apple and black/red grapes
The black grapes are very sweet at the moment because they are in season, i usually put in 5 or six big grapes per portion and blend them including skin together with the other fruit into a puree. it is deliciously sweet and a great inbetween snack or mixed with plain muesli flakes (from the healthstore)a very healthy breakfast!!
Mmmmm, sounds delish - is the fruit cooked first (besides the banana) ? Can it be frozen then into small portions ?
I've introduced Sean to a few different fruits - apple & pear, apple & plum (both of which he loves), mango (which he wasn't too keen on, though I think the mango wasn't quite ripe enought) and banana (which he doesn't really care for either) !! But that mix sounds nice, and once its sweet I'm sure it tickle his fancy LOL
The fruit can be cooked including the banana actually, altough Hylke doesn't like it to much, I think it is because he's used to fresh fruit.........mango's are very sweet and turn nice and creamy once blended. This is great so the puree doesn't get to watery. It is tricky to find ripe mango's, the only way to tell is by colour, should be reddish and yellow and should give in a bit when squeezing it......I hope this is of any help.....good luck
